What Atlanta Moves Actually Involve

Atlanta is one of the fastest-growing metros in the country, and its moving logistics reflect that. The Downtown Connector — where I-75 and I-85 merge through the city — is one of the most congested stretches of highway in the Southeast. Buckhead high-rises require COIs and elevator reservations. HOA communities across the suburbs have strict move-in windows. And Atlanta’s summer heat and afternoon thunderstorms add variables that inexperienced movers aren’t prepared for.

Nelson Westerberg has operated in Atlanta long enough to know which buildings require what, which routes to use at which times, and how to build a move-day plan that accounts for the city rather than fighting it.

Local Knowledge That Matters

  • COI requirements: Buckhead towers, Midtown luxury condos, and many high-rise buildings in Atlantic Station require a certificate of insurance naming the building as an additional insured. We provide COIs at no charge, customized to each building’s specifications.
  • HOA move-in windows: Suburban Atlanta communities — from Alpharetta and Sandy Springs to Smyrna and Peachtree City — frequently restrict move-in to specific hours (typically 8am–5pm weekdays). We coordinate with HOA management in advance so move day runs on schedule.
  • Traffic routing: We avoid the Downtown Connector during peak hours and route through I-285 or surface streets depending on your origin and destination. Morning moves starting before 7am sidestep the worst of it.
  • Weather planning: Atlanta summers mean heat, humidity, and daily afternoon thunderstorms from June through September. We build weather contingencies into every summer move plan and protect furniture accordingly.
  • Corporate campus moves: Atlanta is home to Delta, Coca-Cola, Home Depot, CNN, and dozens of Fortune 500 headquarters. We handle corporate campus relocations, employee moves, and office buildouts with the documentation and coordination those clients require.

Moving Services in Atlanta

Local moves: From Buckhead to Decatur, Midtown to Marietta, or anywhere across the Atlanta metro. Full-service packing, loading, transport, and unpacking. Our crew uses floor runners and door jamb protectors as standard — your home and your furniture arrive in the same condition they left.

Long-distance moves: Atlanta to anywhere in the 48 contiguous states. Nelson Westerberg is a licensed interstate carrier. Your belongings stay with one crew and one truck from pickup to delivery — no broker handoffs, no relay transfers at a warehouse in Tennessee.

Corporate relocation: Atlanta’s corporate sector drives significant relocation volume. We work with HR departments, third-party relocation management companies (RMCs), and executives directly. Full documentation, flexible scheduling, and a dedicated corporate coordinator for multi-employee moves.

Specialty moves: Art collections, antiques, wine, pianos, and high-value items handled with appropriate care. Custom crating available for items that require it.

What You’ll Pay for an Atlanta Move

Nelson Westerberg uses binding not-to-exceed estimates. The price you’re quoted is the ceiling — if the move finishes faster than estimated, you pay less. Local Atlanta moves for a 2-bedroom typically run $850–$1,700. Long-distance moves from Atlanta to the Northeast or West Coast range from $3,800–$8,000+ depending on volume. Corporate packages are scoped and priced separately.

Every estimate is itemized in writing. We don’t do verbal ballparks. You’ll know exactly what you’re paying for — labor, materials, mileage, and any building-specific charges — before you commit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Nelson Westerberg serve all Atlanta neighborhoods?
Yes — we serve Buckhead, Midtown, Old Fourth Ward, Virginia-Highland, Decatur, Sandy Springs, Alpharetta, Marietta, Smyrna, Dunwoody, Peachtree City, and the entire Atlanta metro.

How far in advance should I book?
April through September is peak season in Atlanta — book 4–6 weeks out. For off-season moves, 2 weeks is usually sufficient. High-rise and HOA moves requiring building coordination may need additional lead time.

Do you provide certificates of insurance for Atlanta buildings?
Yes. COIs are standard, at no additional charge, and can be customized to meet your building or HOA’s specific requirements.

Are you a broker or a licensed carrier?
Licensed interstate carrier. We do not broker moves to subcontractors. Your belongings are handled by our employees from start to finish.

What if something is damaged?
All moves include released-value coverage. Full-value protection is available and recommended for high-value items. Claims are handled directly by Nelson Westerberg.

Very Professional

Their movers are very professional, and all their support staff are very good on coordinating the moves to ensure all parties are on the same schedule. With my furniture being temporary stored for few months and there were damages to some of the furniture, they were very efficient to provide compensation for the damaged items. I particularly like their web-based claim filing system, very user friendly.
