The time it takes to move depends on what type of move you are doing. Buying and selling a home takes longer than moving from one rental to another.
If you are selling your current home and buying a new one, it will likely take several months to complete your move from the start to finish of that process. Once you find a home, it takes about 2-4 weeks for the mortgage approval, and another 6-10 weeks to complete the purchase. Additionally, there are many things that can happen during the course of buying a home that might postpone any of the bureaucratic processes that need to take place.
Once you have that settled, the actual time it takes to move depends on how large your home is, and what services you hire from a professional moving company. If you hire professional packers and unpackers the move may take just a few days. If you pack and unpack on your own, the process can take a few weeks up to a month.
For example, packing a 3 bedroom home usually takes around 20-25 hours. So, if you pack steadily after work for a few hours over the course of a month, you will have enough time to do it all. However, if you have dedicated professionals who are packing experts, it might just take 1-2 days.
Apartments are usually smaller than houses, so the actual moving process may be much shorter. Most people rent their apartments. Moving from lease to lease is also a less time-consuming process than selling or buying a home. Most landlords request 30 days notice if you are moving. If you are breaking a lease it may take up to 6 weeks to complete the process. It takes much less time to get a new place on a lease depending on where you live. In competitive markets, you can get a place in as little as one day. In less competitive places, it can take a week or two.
Moving a smaller home takes less time. Studio and 1 bedroom apartments take about 10-15 hours to pack up and move. That means you can do it yourself in 1-2 days. A professional team can usually do that in just one day, or maybe 1.5 days.
A cross-country move, once it’s underway, takes at least a few days for an expedited move. It can, however, take up to a few weeks to receive all of your items.
If you’re trying to save time on a move, using professionals is a great option. They know how to do everything with experience and ease, so it takes them less time!
